What to expect in your first Jiu Jitsu class

Jiu Jitsu is a physical martial art and most training session are based on a hands on approach with training partners within the class. Jiu Jitsu increases your ability think quickly and instinctively in response to your partner’s movements, as well as to remain calm and controlled when you find yourself in a defensive situation.

Jiu Jitsu was designed and developed so that a smaller, weaker person can defend his or herself against, or even defeat, a larger and stronger opponent. So regardless of age, size, gender or physical limitation, any person can utilize the techniques and principals of Jiu Jitsu and reap the benefits of its practice.

  5. Classes vary from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on age group. Breaks are permitted if needed.

  6. At the beginning of each class you’ll be paired with a training partner. Working one on one with your partner and in a controlled environment you’ll be performing a curriculum of BJJ techniques on each other, including: defence and offensive positions, guards, sweeps, attacks and submissions. All under the instructional guidance of Coach David Thompson. Classes generally end with several rounds of “Rolling”. Rolling is the BBJ term for controlled sparring. You’ll be paired with suitable partners, where you’ll be able to practice the techniques you’ve learned in one on one unrehearsed sparring sessions. Fellow members adapt to the skill level of new practitioners encouraging an environment of mutual growth and respect both on and off the mats.

  7. BJJ is physical and practiced one on one in close contact. There are no strikes, punches or kicks. The BJJ philosophy is to bring the fight to the ground, control position and submit your opponent in a non-violent  manner. New practitioners are usually exposed to situations out of their comfort zone, which is one of the many benefits of BJJ!  By exposing yourself to one on one physical contact on a regular basis, you’ll learn to overcome anxieties, control your breathing and adrenaline, while maintaining a calm state of mind in physical moments of conflict and high stress environments.  This conditioning is beneficial both on and off the mats as we live in a world where we need to constantly maintain control and adapt to uncertainty.
